6th December, 2024 - Nicholas Martin to release debut single "Oblivion" on Azure Records.

The London based, Gibraltarian tenor, Nicholas Martin, brings us his unique interpretation of the Astor Piazzolla’s "Oblivion" which stands as one of the most beloved pieces from the Argentine composer and bandoneon virtuoso, celebrated for transforming traditional tango into the modern and innovative "nuevo tango" style.  Oblivion is released on the 6th December, 2024, on Azure Records.

Nicholas Martin is an evocative lyric tenor, born and raised in the small fishing village of Catalan Bay in Gibraltar, inspired by blue skies and beautiful resonances which hallmarks his truly haunting and expressive voice. With a perfect mix of disarming honesty in tune with the emotion behind the passionate ballads, tangos, boleros and classical arias he sings, the blend of his ‘bel canto’ voice alternating between delicate and energetic repertoire is as arresting as impressive.

Nicholas's impassioned performances include an extensive catalogue of songs rooted from his tradition. His expert command of the romantic Spanish, Italian and Portuguese languages since childhood is as authentic as the classic 1950s vintage presentation of his staging.

Notes For Editors

Composed in 1982, "Oblivion" was originally created for the soundtrack of the 1984 Italian film "Enrico IV" (Henry IV), directed by Marco Bellocchio. Its hauntingly beautiful melody and slow, intimate rhythm have made it a timeless work that resonates deeply with audiences.  Originally composed as an instrumental tango it has been rarely recorded for voice, however there are more live recorded French versions than Spanish.

Astor Piazzolla, known for blending traditional tango with elements of jazz and classical music, challenged conventions with his innovative style. "Oblivion" exemplifies this fusion, combining the soulful essence of tango with a contemporary sensibility that continues to captivate listeners worldwide. For many, it is not just music—it’s an experience of timeless elegance and emotional resonance.

Artists, like Nicholas Martin, who cover "Oblivion" today contribute to its enduring legacy, offering their own interpretations of a piece that remains as relevant and moving now as when it was first composed.

“Destello Azul” which features an array of Latin and Spanish repertoire will be released in February, 2025.

"Oblivion" is available via all good digital streaming platforms.
